Sleepless night in the name of merry making...

As I write this, we are inundated with unbelievable noise and this started soon after sunset and it is now past 3.00 am!!!

This is a residential area, yet, the people responsible for this noise put up a marquee outside our estate boundary day before yesterday, i.e. Thursday and that night we were disturbed till around midnight, but since last night the merry making is still going on with complete insolence.

The place is so small, yet, one wonders why they have to use huge speakers and a PA system to 'celebrate'. Calling our local Nyali OCS has proved totally ineffective. It seems he and his men in blue are helpless and one wonders why.....?

And who is the thoughtless person who gives 'permits' for such insane and disturbing merry making to be held in the open in the middle of a residential area? Does the person have any sense?

So, now we are being tortured by a small party out there for the whole night, so that they can 'enjoy' themselves.

Are there no rules and regulations regarding such noise making? If there are, who, how and when will they be enforced?

I hope order and justice will soon prevail. But, I don't think it will be in my lifetime, unfortunately. I tweeted to the Kenya police a while ago, but, there too, there's been no response.

Infuriating use of answering machines by Kenya Power

Of course, it HAD to happen. I mean after nearly a week of hardly any power misbehaviour, this week it's been a continuous on/off, business as usual, one.

In fact, where Nyali is concerned Kenya Power could very well be a candidate for being the world record holder for being the MOST inefficient, unethical, irresponsible company ever!!! This is the award that everybody in Nyali and probably elsewhere would gladly give them without a second thought.

Starting from Wednesday, their outages have been really unbearable to date.

Then, to add to our frustrations, their so-called 'contact centre' no longer resides in Mombasa. You now find that all the various emergency numbers all lead to Nairobi! And this is what you will hear....

'Welcome to Kenya power contact centre. Your call is important to us. Kindly wait to speak to one of our agents'(all this is said with low background music).

The above is repeated twice and then there is a pause in the music and you get the impression that a human (agent), has at long last come on the line...

'Are you still there....?'

This last is spoken and asked in such a manner that you will feel like giving 'it' a very colourful answer, but then you'd be talking to 'nothing'!!!

Of course, the whole will be repeated and then it will either be answered by a human who will, like the taped message, give you his/her name very fast and then you can give it your details, etc.

If this does not happen then, the voice will tell you that ALL their agents are busy, etc.

Considering that we're holding while all this interesting use of technology is taking place over the ether, you'll be fuming for various obvious reasons - your limited credit on the phone is going, the phone battery is probably also dying and of course the fact that you've been catapulted to a time before mankind had discovered electricity by our idiotic monopolistic power company.

Considering they cannot work efficiently enough for us to have a consistent power supply for which they charge an arm and a leg, they owe it to the much maligned public to have toll-free emergency numbers.

So, Kenya Power (you're anything but...), can you please, at least get some toll-free numbers for us to call when you do not and cannot work reliably?

An Open Letter to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif

An Open Letter to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
Epigraph:

"He that would make his own liberty secure must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself." Thomas Paine

By Zia H Shah MD

Dear Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, I know you would be busy in running the affairs of the state and managing the fate of Ex President Pervez Musharaf, but, you would recall that on the very first day of your assumption of power, you banned the Muslim Times (TMT) and possibly other sites from view within Pakistan.
I have had at least 10 testimonies from readers in Pakistan that when they try to log in, instead of our content, they read, "The  website is not accessible. The site contains content that is prohibited for  viewership from within Pakistan."
These readers have written to me from Lahore, Rawalpindi, Sialkot and Rabwah.
Dear Prime Minister, you would recall that you have in a recent speech condemned Ex President Musharaf for not honoring the constitution of Pakistan and acting against it.  But, in your unilateral and unreasonable action against TMT, without due process, you yourself have violated the constitution of Pakistan, Article 19 of which states:
Every citizen shall have the right to freedom of speech and expression, and there shall be freedom of the press, subject to any reasonable restrictions imposed by law in the interest of the glory of Islam or the integrity, security or de fence of Pakistan or any part thereof, friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality, or in relation to contempt of court, or incitement to an offence.
Dear Prime Minister, you or your law experts would also recall that Pakistan is a signatory of Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Article 1 of the Declaration states:
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are   endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
We humbly request our freedom and a brotherly treatment.
Dear Prime Minister, you or your more brainy friends will recall a quote from Evelyn Beatrice Hall, a biographer of the famous French philosopher Voltaire, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it," which is often quoted in support of freedom of speech.
You may also recall a quote of President Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the declaration of Independence of USA, "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism."
Dear Prime Minister, you or those who acted on your behalf to ban TMT, would recall that one of the guiding principles of TMT is that we want to establish universal brotherhood and sisterhood for the whole of humanity.  You profess to believe in the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace be on him, who was one of the staunchest believers in universal brotherhood.  Can we assume that you did not ban us for our contributions in this sphere?
Dear Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, you will recall that one of the core values of TMT is Separation of Mosque-Church and State.  You may refuse it in Pakistan under your governance.  But, you could certainly not deny the sorry state of 160 million Muslims in India or 8 million Sunni Muslims in Iran, if this same value was denied in neighboring India or Iran?
Thomas Paine, one of the Founding Fathers of USA, once wrote about religious freedom:
As to religion, I hold it to be the indispensable duty of all government to protect all conscientious professors thereof, and I know of no other business which government hath to do therewith.
The thousands of regular readers from all around the globe would recall that in the last three years of its publication, TMT has published more than 20,000 posts.  We have aggregated materials for human rights, women rights, universal brotherhood, freedom of thought, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, Muslim heritage and beauties of the teachings of Islam and last but not the least, Separation of Mosque-Church and State.  Dear Prime Minister please tell us for which of these 20,000 contributions have we been knighted with the honor of ban in Pakistan?
Those readers, who have not been able to directly confirm the ban in Pakistan on TMT, can recall and at a glance confirm that the mentor of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, General Zia ul Haq had enacted draconian laws, in 1984, against the members of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, which are still part and parcel of Pakistan law under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif.  According to these laws any member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, who poses to be a Muslim by word or action is to be imprisoned for three years.  Almost all of the 60 members of Editorial team of TMT are guilty of living the life of a Muslim on a daily basis!  Incidentally, I have had to remove the names of our Editorial team members in Pakistan, from the site, for their personal safety.
In closing, dear Prime Minister, we do not want to impose on your precious time, but, please be kind enough to make one of your private secretaries communicate to us that for what crime of ours, the Muslim Times has been banned in Pakistan?
Read in the Muslim Times.
Those who get this email but cannot open the Muslim Times should write to me.

John the Baptist Day: The Quran and the Bible

John the Baptist Day: The Quran and the Bible
Epigraph:
'O Yahya (John the Baptist), hold fast the Book.' And We gave him wisdom while yet a child, and tenderness of heart from Ourself, and purity. And he was pious and dutiful toward his parents. And he was not haughty and rebellious.  And peace was on him the day he was born, and the day he died, and peace there will be on him the day he will be raised up to life again.  (Al Quran 19:13-16)
Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist.  (Matthew 11:11)
John the Baptist is baptizing Jesus, painting by Guido Reni, John the Baptist is shown as a towering figure, over-shadowing Jesus

Written and collected by Zia H Shah MD
Saint John the Baptist Day marks the birth of St John on June 24 each year. It is a public holiday in the autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain.
The Holy Quran paints a picture of John the Baptist, may peace be on him, entirely consistent with its theology but the same cannot be said about the account in the Gospels and the Christian theology.
Saint John the Baptist Day is a public holiday in the autonomous community of Catalonia on June 24. Public life is generally quiet. Most businesses and other organizations are closed. Most stores are closed but some bakers and food stores may be open. Public transport services generally run to a reduced schedule, although there may be no services in rural areas.
St John was a preacher and religious figure during Jesus' lifetime, according to the Christian belief. Baptism rituals in the Jordan River were an important part of his ministry.
John the Baptist is the patron saint of many villages, towns and regions, including Catalonia. The Saint John the Baptist Eve and Day celebrations have their origin in ancient Midsummer solstice celebrations. These are reflected in the use of fire, water and certain herbs in the celebrations.[1]
The Holy Quran presents him as a Jewish prophet among the chain of prophets and it is entirely consistent with the Quranic theology that there are no regions of the world, where prophets were not sent by God to guide mankind.
One obvious dilemma created by the person of John the Baptist is that a person of higher religious standing baptizes a person, who is junior to him.  So, if John the Baptist baptized Jesus, in spiritual realm he had a status higher than Jesus?  If this be true it takes away from the theory of Jesus, may peace be on him, being literal son of God!  We read in the Gospel of Matthew:
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, 'I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?'
Jesus replied, 'Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.' Then John consented. (Matthew 3:13-15)
John the Baptist is baptizing Jesus, presumably taking a superior role and not declaring his faith in 'son of God,' who has come to 'die for sins of humanity,' including those of John the Baptist's, if any, and his followers.  He continues with his ministry rather than yielding to the alleged son of God!
According to Encyclopedia Britannica, "All four Gospels recognize in John the start of the Christian Era, and each in its own way tries to reconcile John's precedence in time and Jesus' acceptance of his message and of a baptism of repentance from his hands (elements suggesting subordination to John), with the author's belief in Jesus as Messiah and son of God." [2]
The myth making of Gospel of Luke knows no bounds, even in his mother's womb John recognizes Jesus—also still in his mother's womb—as his Lord. (Luke 1:39-45)   Yet in the Gospel of Matthew we read that John the Baptist is not sure about the status of Jesus, just a few years before crucifixion and sends his followers to make queries:
When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, 'Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?'
Jesus replied, 'Go back and report to John what you hear and see:  The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.'
Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist.  (Matthew 11:2-11)
John the Baptist does not get to hear the story about his grandeur as his followers had left before Jesus praised him, but Jesus' followers are told that John the Baptist is the greatest of all.  Presumably he is greater than Jesus also as he was born of Mother Mary.
No reason is offered as to why John the Baptist is greater than the Prophet Abraham or the Prophet Moses, who are the Founding Fathers of Judaism, in their own right, even though centuries apart?
It is strange that according to St. Paul a new religion is being launched in Jesus dying for the sins of humanity, yet both Jesus and John the Baptist are living the lives of Jewish prophets and both are circumcised and continue to follow other Jewish ethics, according to the Gospels.
According to St. Paul a new Covenant is being signed between God and His people but through out the lifetime of Jesus, there is no mention of the new Covenant, he and his followers are practicing the old Jewish Covenant every day of the week, even as Jesus prays passionately to God the Father, for the bitter cup to be taken away from him.  He himself is circumcised and so is everyone of his followers and the person who baptizes him, until St. Paul signs a new deal more than 20 years after crucifixion, to ease pagan's conversion to Christianity.
So, much for a new Covenant!
The external sign of the old Covenant, which is circumcision, is being practiced universally, until decades after crucifixion or the new Covenant, in the new Christian communities.
Interestingly, in reading the account of John the Baptist in the Gospels, we do find a mention of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, as 'the Prophet.'  We read in the Gospel of John:
Now this was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, 'I am not the Messiah.'
They asked him, 'Then who are you? Are you Elijah?'
He said, 'I am not.'
'Are you the Prophet?'
He answered, 'No.' (John 1:19-21)
Incidentally, here we have another of the contradictions in the Bible, as John the Baptist refuses to be Elijah, but, Jesus calls him the Elijah. (Matthew 11:13-15)
At any rate, what is of greater interest in this account of the first chapter of Gospel of John, is the expression, 'the Prophet,' which is separate from Elijah or the Messiah and can most fittingly be applied only to the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace be on him.
On this holy day, let me extend an invitation to the two billion Christians that as we study the account of John the Baptist, in both the Holy Quran and the Holy Bible, as we celebrate his day, to try to compare and contrast the two theologies with the goal to find common themes.  Let me conclude in the words of the Holy Quran:
Say, 'O People of the Book! come to a word equal between us and you — that we worship none but Allah, and that we associate no partner with Him, and that some of us take not others for Lords beside Allah.' But if they turn away, then say, 'Bear witness that we have submitted to God.' (Al Quran 3:65)
